THEM THAT FEAR HIM

By Jay Pearson

As you know the benefits of the Lord are not only numerous but amazing. They are wealth shared with those that fear him. The Lord asks that we don’t forget all these benefits.

Psalm 103:2
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

You can’t forget something you do not know. Also, you can’t utilize something you do not know you have. There are many benefits for “Them that fear him.” In Psalms 103 I want to call your attention to verses 11,13, and 17.

Psalm 103:11, 13, 17
11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.
13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;

Deliverance to them that fear him, blessings to those that trust in him, and no want to them that fear him. Even the natural man perks up to benefits for himself. For those with the residing Holy Spirit, benefits inspire thankfulness.

The fear of the Lord is mentioned throughout God’s Word. It’s a great and profitable word study. Let’s take a look at a few.

Proverbs 9:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 9:11
For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.

The fear of the Lord: Wow, what benefits there are to the man who wishes to know the true God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!

The fear of the Lord also inspires a different response to some. To one it freezes or stops short. To another it inspires obedience. Here are just a couple of examples.

2 Chronicles 17:10
And the fear of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Judah, so that they made no war against Jehoshaphat.

1 Samuel 11:6-7
6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.
7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

The fear of the Lord: We should never forget who he really is and the unquestionable power and control as the creator of the entire universe. He is the same God today as he was yesterday; the same God from Genesis to Revelations. He is the same God that parted the Red Sea for his chosen to cross safely in deliverance. He is the same God that closed that same sea upon Pharoah and those who intended to harm his chosen, the same God and creator.

Another benefit to those that fear him is mentioned in Proverbs 10:27. Also the judgement on the wicked is mentioned in that verse.

Proverbs 10:27
The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

I see an example of the latter in Acts chapter five. God is to be feared, loved and respected. When ever someone in the bible came within close proximity to him they fell back or fell on their face in worship. They did not puff out their chests and say: I’m one of your sons. They feared.

Acts 5:1-5, 11
1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.

The benefits to “them that fear mim” they are many.

Psalm 147:11
The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.

Luke 1:49-50
49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

Now I would like to take you on a treasure hunt in search of the fear of the Lord and finding the knowledge of God.

map to hid treasure

Let’s start in Proverbs 2:1

Proverbs 2:1
My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;

It is important to note God is not speaking to just anyone. He is speaking to His chosen ones. On the map just around the bend is Proverbs 2:2

Proverbs 2:2
So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;

Next on the Treasure map is Proverbs 2:3.

Proverbs 2:3
Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;

Next on our map toward the X marks the spot is Proverbs 2:4

Proverbs 2:4
If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

Next, the valuable hidden treasure: God’s word is not for the unbeliever. It is of no use to him. He can’t see it because he doesn’t believe. It’s just a well-written novel at best to him. You must dig to find a hid treasure and God is the one to reveal it. The unbeliever is not one of God’s sons. Now the valuable hid treasure awaits in Proverbs 2:5.

Proverbs 2:5
Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

And why is that? Proverb 2:6.

Proverbs 2:6
For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

Are we finished? No, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Out of God’s mouth comes knowledge and understanding. We will never know all of the Lord. We continue to dig in his treasure and reap the fruit thereof. The benefits of God are many and many to “THEM THAT FEAR HIM.”

God bless you all, and forget not all his benefits to “THEM THAT FEAR HIM.”
