In a few hours my wife will be driving me to the airport as I begin my first mission of 2011, the presentation of “The Principles of the Doctrine of Christ.” This coming weekend I will be teaching in South Harrow, England, and the following weekend in Swansea, Wales. I am writing to you to request your prayerful intercession on behalf of me, the class participants, and for my family here in Baton Rouge.
We live in a time when there is a vast movement within the church body to be all-inclusive. It's a sign of the times. The all-inclusive church is the "politically correct" church. It is a well-meaning but misguided effort to expunge bigotry and prejudice from the Christian community by eliminating all points of prohibition from the Scriptures. Within this environment, the only black and white truth is that there IS no black and white truth. Everyone is right, so no one is wrong – except for those who disagree with this premise. Once we get rid of the naysayers, we will all be one big happy family. Blah, blah, blah.
Now, I realize that an all-inclusive church is the only way to achieve the "Imagine there's no heaven"/Star Trek ideal of the brotherhood of man and universal world peace. But as for me, I prefer truth to fables. I believe that the God of all creation came to earth in the form of Jesus Christ and said, “Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division” (Luke 12:51)
The way of Jesus does not unite, it divides. It is exclusive, not inclusive. The path of righteousness is narrow, and there are few that find it.
Matthew 7:13-14:
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
The same is true of the doctrine of Christ. Like the sword of the Spirit itself, this doctrine is meant to be a standard by which we can separate those who live in truth from those who follow error.
2 John 1:9-11:
Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
There is always a risk to proclaiming an unpopular idea. As Paul said, "Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?" (Gal. 4:16). But the fact remains, true unity comes only when people are united in truth. Over the next two weekends, I will be doing my best to present the principles of the doctrine of Christ in a way that will show that Jesus is the rock of our salvation and the foundation of holy living. I ask for your prayers that the Lord will be magnified and glorified, and that people will come away knowing they have spent time in his holy presence.
