My Upcoming Mission to Nepal

The foremost purpose of this letter is to solicit your prayers for my upcoming mission to Nepal. As you can imagine, I am very excited about this mission but also very concerned that I make a meaningful contribution to the lives of our Nepalese brothers and sisters in Christ.

Reverend Henry Musana of GEM Sanctuary provided my introduction to Nepal just as he did for me first in Uganda, and then Kenya and Rwanda. Henry ministered in Nepal last April and when he told me he'd taught a version of my class, If Ye Do These Things, Ye Shall Never Fall, I hoped that the doors might open for me as well. Henry put me in contact with a brother named Sabdong Tamang who pastors a home church in Kathmandu and teaches at a Bible college. Together we began to plan this mission.

It took some time to work out the best dates for me for this mission because of the busy Nepalese festival season. Also, I told Sabdong I wanted to minister in some remote villages as well as in the city of Kathmandu. In the end, he worked out what looks to be a very good plan.

A Little About Nepal

As described by Wikipedia, Nepal is a multi-ethic nation with a population of about 26.4 million people. It is bordered by China to the north, and India to the south, east, and west. Nepal is situated in the Himalayas. Eight of the ten tallest mountains in the world are in Nepal including Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth.

Nepal measures about 500 miles west to east and 93 to 155 miles north to south. In the maps to the right, the size of Nepal is compared first to Louisiana in the USA, and below it to France.

The prominent religion of Nepal is Hinduism. The main minorities are Tibetan Buddhists, Muslims, Kiratans, and Christians. According to "The Voice of the Martyrs" web page, Christians make up about 3 percent of the population, and Hindus account for 75 percent.

Christianity is not illegal in Nepal, however it is illegal to evangelize or to require even your own child to attend church with you. Anyone who appears to force his faith on another is likely to be jailed, and a new convert to Christ is often outcast by his family and society.

Our Planned Itinerary

This mission will last from 10 to 25 October. My sister Kei and I will meet in Chicago and fly out of the USA on Sunday 9 October. From there we will fly fourteen hours to Abu Dhabi International in Dubai, and then five more hours to Kathmandu, Nepal, arriving Monday night Nepal time (GMT + 5:45).

As you can see, this will be a very full mission. It is built around four programs: Kanchanpur, Kailali, Kathmandu and Lalitpur. My primary audience will be pastors and their assistants. At each location I will teach for about four hours each day. After lunch I will try to answer questions from the pastors concerning my teaching material and anything else they have in mind. If my ministry is well received, I will plan to teach my Ministers Training Series in Nepal in 2017.

The truth is, the more I think about it, the more likely I am to be overwhelmed. I am very grateful to be entrusted by God with this opportunity. I have done my best to prepare, but in the end that is all I can do. Only the Spirit of the Lord can bring God's words to life.
